Hey everyone, hope you’ve all had a great start to the year.
Personally, I took a bit of a break from this project and started learning more about unity, procedural art and algorithmics, and I’m currently doing a course on Java (which I hope to be using for android dev in the future).

Since I’ve come back, I have redeveloped weapons, fixed up the parkour (and infinite momentum glitch), and overall just improved older things with my new skills and knowledge. One of these is the main menu and user interface.
So now I have a sexy new menu which uses lots of cool colour blending and a 3D star shader. The buttons can be controlled by mouse and keyboard, and also feature controller support - because I’ve been doing that recently.
The old menu was something which I put together based on a template from a previous project when I got the idea for this game, and I kind of left it alone while I was working on the game. It was only when I came back (almost a year after I started the project) to notice how horribly ugly it was:
Well, it wasn’t that bad, but definitely needed some work. So I pulled out my shader cookbook, grabbed the ingredients, mixed them together, added some spices, poured it into a dish, popped that into the oven for 120 minutes on 400K, and it resulted in a well cooked dish for everybody to enjoy.
But the shader wasn’t really the focus until I had the menu finished. I have to admit, it started out pretty bare. I just wanted to get some menu items on the screen, and a big title to frame the whole thing. Choosing a nice font took longer than making the menu. Eventually I ended up with a flat, simple menu with a nice colour gradient in the background like all the cool kids are doing.
From there, I added the stars in (which is the first 3D shader I’ve coded), and then gave them some slight motion so the screen didn’t feel frozen or static. I initially tried making them sparkle, but it was a little over-the-top and distracting.
You’ll notice I also made the little arrows wiggle on side of the text. It’s the small details that count.
